6 Tips to Prevent Car Theft

Actively taking measures to prevent car theft is not something that many vehicle owners keep at the forefront of their minds. Of course, nobody wants their car to be stolen, but it can be argued that many people don't take the proper steps to ensure their vehicle's safety. Insurance companies routinely provide statistics on the most stolen vehicles, but many times, the cars that are stolen are simply the cars that provided easiest access to the thieves.

The following tips can be used to help prevent a vehicle from being stolen:

Never Leave Your Car Unattended While It's Running

Many people have been known to leave their car idling while they run an errand. While a quick transaction at an ATM or a single purchase at a store may not take a long time, thieves don't need an extended opportunity to steal your car. If a car is running, it's a good bet that the doors are also unlocked. Thieves can simply open the door, get in and drive away.

Lock Your Car

This may seem obvious, but many cars are left unlocked on streets and in parking lots every day. There are many reasons why someone may leave their car unlocked. Perhaps they had their hands full with children or belongings and simply forgot. Perhaps they didn't depress the lock button on their key fob hard enough to send the signal. Whatever the reason, unlocked cars are less protected than locked ones.

Take Your Keys

Another seemingly obvious statement, but many cars are stolen because the keys were left inside. Some people leave their keys dangling in the ignition while others hide the keys in the center console or glove box. Thieves are wise to this, and are familiar with the common hiding places in a vehicle.

Park in a Well Lit, Well Populated Area

Darkness is the cloak under which many thieves operate. An owner that parks their vehicle away from other vehicles in a dimly lit section of the parking lot is leaving it vulnerable to theft. It's incredibly easy to steal a vehicle when nobody is around and there are no lights illuminating the parking lot.

Keep All the Windows Closed

In the hot summer months, it is common to see vehicles parked with all of their windows cracked. This attempt to circulate air and keep the interior relatively cool is also an invitation for car thieves to enter the car. It does not require much effort for a thief to get their fingers inside the vehicle and push the window down far enough to unlock the doors.

Use a Club

The Club is a lockable metal bar that is placed across a vehicle's steering wheel. It prevents anyone from driving the car because it keeps the steering wheel from being turned. Thieves who have lots of time may not be hindered by the Club. However, most thieves have precious little time to steal the car. Seeing the Club will help distract a thief from your vehicle because of the extra work it would require to steal the car.

There are many other steps vehicle owners can take to help prevent their car from being stolen. Following the simple tips above should provide an extra measure of safety when it comes to keeping a car out of a thief's hands.
