Turbo Engine Parts
Tips
There are a few important things to keep in mind when choosing turbo engine parts. The first is that not all engines are built to deal with the extra stress associated with a turbo. Luckily, those under-built engines can quickly be brought up to par. The next thing to do is to figure out how much power your engine can make safely. Once this has been done, any parts that need strengthening will become apparent.
Here are some typical upgrades:
- Forged pistons may be required to deal with the additional heat and pressure created by the turbo. If you add new pistons you will need to purchase new piston rings as well. Normally both parts can be purchased from the same vendor.
- Forged connecting rods are often a wise investment as well. Many factory rods aren't up to the task when it comes to a jump in power. If forged rods are a part of your upgrade, be sure to order new rod bearings as well.
- A high-flow aftermarket fuel pump may be needed to deliver the extra fuel required for a turbo engine. Running lean (too little fuel) will have catastrophic results for any engine.
- In addition to the pump, new fuel injectors may be needed to help deliver the extra fuel quantity.
- Stock head bolts on some engines may not be strong enough for turbo charging. Automotive Racing Products is a highly trusted name in this field. An upgraded head gasket may also be needed to keep the newly found cylinder pressure where it belongs.
Not all of these parts will be necessary on every car, but are all quite important when building a reliable engine. Many manufacturers now produce factory turbo cars that run for hundreds of thousands of miles. The right parts will make sure your turbo is just as trouble-free.
