Auto safety is a very important subject for anyone who operates a motor vehicle. By being aware of how to drive safely, you can potentially save lives.

It may seem painfully obvious, but a large percentage of people don't bother to buckle their seatbelts while driving. Before you put the car in drive, make sure that yourself and your passengers are all wearing seatbelts. The diagonal strap should go over the shoulder, not under.

Using your turn signals helps other drivers anticipate your moves and react accordingly. Some people don't bother to use their turn signals in some situations where they seem unnecessary. This is a bad habit to get into, though, and you should practice using your turn signal whenever you are turning even when you don't see the point.

Anticipating the actions of other drivers and being a defensive driver can help you avoid all kinds of problems. Check your mirrors very frequently to be aware of what's happening around you. When you come to an intersection, even if you have the right of way, be sure to watch the other drivers who may not be aware that it's your turn to go. Being defensive and not trusting the actions of the people around you can help you avoid accidents.

Most cars have a "blind spot" towards the rear which can be dangerous when you want to move over on a multi-lane road. Rather than solely trusting your mirrors, actually turn your head and take a quick glance behind you to make sure there isn't someone behind you that your mirrors didn't show you. Be careful to make sure your hands don't jerk on the wheel to follow your line of sight, however.

These are only a few of the ways you can be a safe driver. If you'd like more advice, tips, or practice, you can always take a defensive driving course with your local DMV.
